Abstract
Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) has become a critical trenchless technology for the installation of pipelines, utility conduits, telecommunications systems, and underground infrastructure in complex operational environments. As HDD installations continue to increase in scale and mechanical complexity, the reliability of pullback assemblies has emerged as a major engineering concern, particularly in high-load drilling operations where improper equipment selection may result in excessive tensile stress, torsional instability, structural failure, and operational downtime. Despite the growing industrial dependence on pullback swivel systems, limited research has examined the engineering relationship between swivel load rating, towing head compatibility, and overall HDD operational reliability. This study presents an engineering performance analysis of Brewis’ downhole pullback swivels with emphasis on proper load rating optimization, towing head compatibility, and failure prevention in HDD operations. The research integrates HDD pullback mechanics, finite element stress analysis, mechanical reliability evaluation, and comparative load-performance assessment to examine the effects of properly rated and improperly rated swivel configurations under varying operational conditions. Mechanical performance parameters including tensile load capacity, torque isolation efficiency, stress distribution, fatigue susceptibility, and connection stability were evaluated using engineering modeling and standards-based assessment frameworks. The findings indicate that properly rated pullback swivels combined with compatible towing heads significantly improve load stability, reduce stress concentration, minimize failure probability, and enhance HDD operational safety. The analysis further demonstrates that incompatible towing head configurations and underrated swivel systems substantially increase the risk of fatigue failure, bearing degradation, threaded connection damage, and infrastructure-related operational losses. The study contributes an integrated engineering framework for HDD swivel selection, mechanical reliability optimization, and operational risk mitigation while providing practical recommendations for HDD contractors, drilling engineers, and infrastructure operators involved in high-capacity trenchless installation projects.
