Abstract

Urban development in developing nations is often characterized by rapid population growth, inadequate infrastructure, informal housing expansion, and unequal access to public services. While urbanization has the potential to stimulate economic growth, reduce poverty, and create employment opportunities, socioeconomic inequalities continue to widen in many regions. These disparities manifest in uneven access to education, healthcare, transportation, sanitation, housing, digital connectivity, and livelihood opportunities, disproportionately affecting low-income and marginalized communities. This research provides a comparative assessment of socioeconomic inequalities across developing nations such as India, Nigeria, Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa, focusing specifically on social welfare outcomes. Using a mixed-method analytical framework, the study examines how governance structures, urban planning models, fiscal capacities, and social protection schemes influence disparities in quality of life. The findings reveal that despite robust economic growth in several cities, poverty pockets, informal settlements, and systemic exclusion persist due to weak institutional capacity, inadequate welfare delivery mechanisms, and unbalanced development priorities. The study concludes with a policy framework aimed at fostering inclusive urban development through equity-driven planning, targeted welfare interventions, and multidimensional poverty reduction strategies.
