Post-Harvest Loss Reduction Strategies: Assessing Cold Chain Innovations and Storage Systems in Developing Agricultural Markets
Issue Vol. 1 No. 01 (2025): Volume 01 , Issue 01 Oct 2025 --- Section Articles --- Published Date: 2025-10-01
Abstract
Post-harvest losses present a critical challenge for developing agricultural markets, where infrastructural limitations, inadequate handling practices, and climatic variability significantly degrade food quality and reduce market value. These losses—especially in highly perishable commodities such as vegetables, fruits, dairy, and fish—often exceed 30–40%, resulting in economic setbacks for farmers, supply chain inconsistencies, and reduced consumer access to fresh produce. Cold chain systems, including pre-cooling mechanisms, cold rooms, refrigerated trucks, controlled-atmosphere storage, solar-powered units, and IoT-integrated monitoring tools, have emerged as transformative solutions to address these inefficiencies. This research study offers a comprehensive assessment of how cold chain innovations reduce post-harvest waste, extend shelf life, enhance value chain efficiency, and promote sustainable agricultural development. Combining quantitative field data from 180 stakeholders with qualitative insights from traders, logistics operators, and cold chain service providers, the study reveals that the adoption of structured cold chains can cut losses by nearly half while increasing farmer income by up to 47%. The findings emphasize the need for integrated policy reforms, capacity building, and accessible technology models to drive large-scale adoption of modern storage and cooling innovations across developing markets.
